This sextet of Japanese chisels consists of "Tataki Nomi" with widths of 9, 12, 15, 30, and 36mm. They have a length of 295mm. These are new, vintage tools. They are imported directly from Japan. Some were produced in the city of Miki, famous for its tools. The Ura (the hollow shape on the back of the blade) are black, a sign of tempering after forging. These are vintage chisels from the 1980s.
The blades are made of hand-forged, two-layer high-carbon steel, featuring a thick layer of hard steel (a hallmark of quality).
These "Tataki Nomi" chisels (timber chisels) are similar to our carpenter's chisels (though longer), being thicker and longer than the small "Oire Nomi" prized by Westerners. These chisels are built to withstand much greater impact during work. They are perfectly suited for cutting mortises in timber framing, but also for furniture making with hardwoods like oak (expect a slight adjustment to the bevel angle).
Like all new chisels, sharpening will be required. You will also need to adjust the ferrule (a very simple process). First, you must shape (crush with a hammer) the handle a bit more so that the handle protrudes 2 to 3mm from the ferrule. Then, simply wet the end of the wooden handle and strike it with a hammer (using its edge) concentrically to push the wood around the ferrule. Yes, manufacturers generally sharpen their products roughly to save time. In Japan, it is always up to the tool's buyer to finalize and adapt the tool to their own use; it is a philosophy of the tool...
With these tools, you can discover Japanese craftsmanship. For cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply for the DIY enthusiast.
