This pair of Japanese bar clamps, called "Hatagane," are made of chrome-plated steel and can be used for light to medium loads. Hatagane always have this typical shape: they consist of a wing nut with square-section jaws and a flat or square bar.
This large 600mm long model features holes drilled into the rail that allow the jaws to be locked in place, providing a locking mechanism that allows for higher pressure without the arm moving. Each one weighs 770 grams.
These clamps are useful not only for gluing, but also for clamping during marking & sawing operations. It is this marking & sawing technique that can be seen in the book "Making Shoji" by Toshio Odate, THE reference for crafting Japanese sliding doors (Shoji = sliding door).
Since the throat depth is quite shallow, the rail rests directly on the workpiece, which facilitates precise clamping without slipping. This also helps to prevent deformation when alternating their position on the front/back of the piece.
For me, these are the best clamps for small paneling work for making boxes or drawers.
