This rare Japanese Hira Kanna plane has a 70mm wide blade. The plane is new, in excellent condition. The name of the kanna is "Ban-Yu" and it was made by the famous Usui Kengo, renowned for his many top-class kannas.

Usui Kengo comes from a long line of blacksmiths whose workshop was located in Yoita in the Echigo prefecture, highly regarded for its tool production. This plane was forged during the "Showa" period (70s). It has all the manufacturing characteristics of Usui Kengo: a blade with an extremely fine forging (very easy to sharpen) and a beautiful finish on the top of the blade (beveled). The hammer marks contrast with the hand-engraved signature. It is an exceptional piece for a collector or an experienced user. One no longer finds Usui Kengo planes in this "new old stock" condition. At the time, it was the best that could be made, so one must understand that this type of kanna is a sort of rare vintage grand cru.

The Dai, the Japanese white oak block, is solid and in perfect condition; the sole is very smooth and perfectly straight. The Dai measures: length 291mm, width 87mm, height 36mm. It is truly superb, perfectly adjusted with a Tsutsumi (mouth reduction).

The blade is made of high-carbon "Super" blue steel, hand-forged in two layers. The soft "Jigane" iron is made of "Kamaji" cast steel. This kanna is from the finest forge and the Dai is perfectly executed. It is indeed the work of a master who produced the highest quality tools with the greatest care. It is a collector's item.

It is the highest quality plane for a user who would like to own a small treasure. It can be used in fine cabinetry or joinery. Like any new plane, there is a whole set of adjustments to be made before use. I will provide all the advice for its proper use and adjustment.
