This extremely rare Japanese "Hira Kanna" plane has a 70mm wide blade. The plane is vintage and new old stock from the "Teruhide" brand. It was forged in Tokyo by Ishido Hideo, the eleventh generation. It has all the characteristics of the "Teruhide" forge: an iron with fine forging (very easy to sharpen), a very minimalist finish, and a superbly executed Ura. It is an exceptional piece for a collector or an experienced user. Teruhide planes in this "new old stock" condition are no longer to be found.
The Dai (Japanese red oak block) is in perfect condition, and the sole is perfectly straight. The Dai measures: 275mm in length, 87mm in width, and 35mm in height. The blade is made of high-carbon, two-layer hand-forged steel. The jigane (supporting steel) is made of kamaji, a very soft forged steel. The signature is hand-engraved, and the Tokyo guild logo (the turtle) can be seen stamped in the corner of the Ura. The cap iron is thick and laminated. The top of the blade has a slight deformation due to the insertion of the iron.
This is traditional forging using coal and water quenching with clay tempering. The tempering can be seen on the back of the blade with its demarcation line at mid-height. This kanna is of excellent forge quality. The Dai is perfectly executed and signed. This is truly the class of craftsman who works on their forge with the utmost devotion.
This is a premium quality plane for an experienced user or a user who wishes to own something very high-end. It can be used in joinery, on timber framing work, or on panel work in cabinetmaking. The plane can be delivered raw or tuned (the sole) according to your preference (finishing or roughing). New planes always require a first round of adjustments before use. I will provide all the advice for its proper use.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you will be able to discover Japanese tools. For woodworkers, carpenters, luthiers, or simply DIY enthusiasts.
