This extremely rare Japanese "Hira Kanna" plane has a 70mm wide blade. The plane is vintage and new old stock from the "Hatsuhiro" brand. It was forged during the "Showa" period (60s-80s). It possesses all the characteristics of the "Hatsuhiro" forge: a blade with a very fine forge (very easy to sharpen) and a very minimalist finish, linear hammering marks on the back of the blade, and a superbly executed Ura. It is sold in its original box. This is an exceptional piece for a collector or an experienced user. Hatsuhiro planes in this "new old stock" condition are no longer to be found.
The Dai (Japanese white oak block) is solid and in perfect condition; the sole is perfectly straight. The Dai dimensions: length 274mm, width 85mm, height 37mm. The blade is made of high-carbon, dual-layer, hand-forged blue steel. The signature is deeply stamped and graphically composed, the blade is very sleek, and the chipbreaker is thick and also signed. This is traditional forging, using charcoal and water quenching with clay annealing. The annealing can be seen on the back of the blade with its demarcation line at mid-height.
This kanna features an excellent forge. The Dai is perfectly executed and signed. It truly belongs to that class of craftsmen who work on their forge with the greatest devotion. This is a premium quality plane for an experienced user or a user who wishes to own something truly high-end.
It can be used in joinery, on framing pieces, or for panel work in cabinetmaking. The plane can be delivered raw or tuned (the sole) according to your preference (finishing or stock removal). New planes always require an initial set of adjustments before use. I will provide all necessary advice for its proper use.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you can discover Japanese tools. For joiners, carpenters, luthiers, or simply DIY enthusiasts.
