Extremely rare 70mm Japanese Hira Kanna plane by Teruhide

280€

This extremely rare "Hira Kanna" Japanese plane features a 70mm wide blade. The plane is vintage and "new old stock" from the "Teruhide" brand. It was forged in Tokyo by the eleventh generation, Ishido Hideo. It possesses all the hallmarks of the "Teruhide" forge: a blade with fine forging (making it very easy to sharpen), a very minimalist finish, and a superbly executed Ura. It is an exceptional piece for a collector or an experienced user. Teruhide planes in this "new old stock" condition are no longer to be found.

The Dai (Japanese white oak block) is in perfect condition, and the sole is perfectly straight. The Dai dimensions: length 275mm, width 87mm, height 35mm. The blade is made of hand-forged, two-layer high-carbon steel. The jigane (backing steel) is made of kamaji, a very soft forged steel. The signature is hand-engraved, and the Tokyo guild logo (the turtle) can be seen stamped in the corner of the Ura. The cap iron is thick and laminated. The top of the blade has a slight deformation due to the insertion of the blade.

This is an old-fashioned forge, using charcoal and water quenching with clay annealing. The annealing can be seen on the back of the blade with its demarcation line at mid-height. This kanna is of excellent forging quality. The Dai is perfectly executed and signed. This is truly the caliber of craftsman who works on their forge with the greatest devotion.

This is a premium-quality plane for an experienced user or a user who wishes to own something truly top-of-the-range. It can be used in joinery, on structural timber work, or on cabinetmaking panel work. The plane can be delivered raw or tuned (the sole) according to your preference (finishing or stock removal). New planes always require a first series of adjustments before use. I will provide all the advice for its proper use.

Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you will be able to discover Japanese tools. For joiners, carpenters, luthiers, or simply DIY enthusiasts.

"Super passionate and fascinating. A few months after buying a knife in the shop, I treated myself to a great short course: discussions about Japanese knives (use, manufacturing, composition...) and an introduction to sharpening. I highly recommend this professional."

"Simply the only shop for Japanese woodworking tools in the Ile-de-France region, and to my knowledge, in France. Lucas is always generous with sharing his knowledge, and his prices are competitive. He has master-crafted planes at fair prices. Go for it with your eyes closed."
