I am selling this "Hira Kanna" Japanese plane with a 70mm wide blade. The plane is almost new; it is in perfect condition and was imported directly from Japan. Only the dai (wooden block) shows some wear as it has been slightly modified. It is a "Kikyo" brand plane, and its name is "Tachibanna." Japanese blacksmiths often enjoy naming their tools, whether by paying tribute to certain blacksmiths or through poetic names that are almost like Haikus.
The dai (Japanese white oak block) is in very good condition. The sole will need to be flattened and readjusted, as the wood moves over time. The dai measures: 288mm in length, 89mm in width, and 36mm in height. It has been chamfered at the sole; this is normal, as it reduces contact to the width of the blade. The top of the dai has also been chamfered for better hand comfort. There is no rigid orthodoxy regarding tools in Japan; each craftsman adapts them to their own taste and hand. The blade is made of hand-forged, two-layer "special" carbon steel, and the chipbreaker is also laminated and signed.
This is the perfect plane for someone looking for a high-end tool with excellent cutting steel. A plane in such good condition, complete with its original box, is difficult to find. I will provide full advice on its proper use and adjustment.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled rather than pushed.
With this tool, you can discover the world of Japanese implements. Suitable for cabinetmakers, luthiers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply for the DIY enthusiast.
