This Japanese plane "Hira Kanna" has a 64mm wide blade. The plane is vintage and perfectly new. It was forged by a blacksmith named "Kirimi Musou". It is quite rare to find kannas that come from the South of Japan, because it is not a tool production region. This one comes from the Kumamoto prefecture, opposite Nagasaki. The kanna dates from the Showa period (60-70).

The Dai, a block of Japanese red oak, is solid and in perfect condition, the sole is very smooth, it is very straight. The Dai measures: length 285mm, width 80mm, height 36mm. It is really sturdy and heavy, it has taken on a beautiful brown patina with its decades of storage. The iron is made of hand-forged, two-layer, highly carbonized steel. The iron has a hammered finish and the top of the iron has this trapezoid shape that I particularly appreciate. The signature is beautifully hand-engraved. The iron was forged at low temperature in coal with annealing in clay. It can be seen on the back of the iron with a demarcation line. The counter iron is laminated and particularly thick, its workmanship is excellent too.

This kanna is of excellent forge and the Dai is perfectly executed. It is indeed that class of craftsman who works with the greatest devotion to their forge, it is a precious kanna.

This is the premium quality plane for experienced users or a user who would like to move up a level. It can be used in carpentry, on frame parts, or on panel work in cabinetmaking. Like any new plane, there is a whole set of adjustments to be made before use. The plane can be delivered raw or adjusted according to its convenience. I will provide all the advice for its proper use and its good adjustments.

Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you can discover Japanese tools. For collectors, cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply DIY enthusiasts.
