This very rare "Hira Kanna" Japanese plane features a 70mm wide blade from the "Otokozakari" brand. It was forged by the renowned Tsutsumitomoichi in Tokyo around the 1980s; Tsutsumitomoichi is now deceased. It is brand new and imported directly from Japan. Very beautiful work has been done on this iron. It is truly crafted in a very raw style, which today we would call wabi-sabi.
The Dai (Japanese white oak block) is solid and in perfect condition, and the sole is perfect (tuned) and perfectly straight. The Dai measures: 288mm in length, 90mm in width, and 36mm in height. It is very sturdy and heavy... The selection of the oak grain is just perfect (very stable).
The iron is hand-forged from two-layer high-carbon steel. The signature is magnificent; the cap iron is very thick, laminated, and also signed. It has a type of acid finish called "suminagashi." This is an iron from an excellent forge, charcoal-softened and water-quenched. The backing steel (jigane) is "kamaji," an old, very soft smelted steel. There are traces of oxidation due to long-term storage. This iron will be a pure delight to sharpen.
This kanna is from an excellent forge and the Dai is perfectly executed. It belongs to that class of artisans who work with the greatest devotion to their forge, such as Yamamoto, Nakano, etc... It is one of my finest kanna. This kanna was part of my collection. It is the premium quality plane that cannot be found elsewhere for a collector or experienced user. It can be used for carpentry, structural timber work, or cabinetmaking panel work.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled rather than pushed.
With this tool, you can discover Japanese tools. For collectors, cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply (advanced) handymen.
