This rare Japanese "Hira Kanna" plane has a 70mm wide blade. The plane is in brand-new condition. The kanna was crafted by the famous Funatsu Yuuji under the Funahiro brand.
Funahiro represents the pinnacle of what is currently being made in Japan. This shokunin forges his tools in the city of Yoita in the Echigo prefecture on the west coast of Japan, which is famous for its finest blacksmiths (Usi Kengo, Tsunehiro, Kiyohisa...). Funahiro is at the peak of his craft, only producing his kannas in batches of 300 pieces. He is very old now, and it is possible that he will retire soon, as he well deserves. Therefore, one must understand that this type of kanna is a sort of rare vintage.
The plane, named "Genfu," is forged from ASSAB K120 powder-technology steel. The Dai, a Japanese white oak block, is solid and in perfect condition; the sole is smooth and perfectly straight. The Dai dimensions: length 290mm, width 88mm, height 36mm. It was crafted by the best daya, who is none other than "Koyoshiya." It is truly sublime, perfectly fitted with a Tsutsumi (mouth reduction). It is delivered in a calligraphed paulownia wood kiri box with a faux-leather protective pouch for transport.
The blade is made of high-carbon (special mix) bi-layer hand-forged steel. The blade features a forge-black finish. This kanna comes from the best of forges, and the Dai is perfectly executed. It is truly this type of brand that produces tools of the highest quality in very small batches.
This is a plane of the highest quality for a user who would like to own a small treasure. It can be used in cabinetmaking or carpentry. Like any new plane, there is a whole set of adjustments to be made before use. The plane can be delivered raw or adjusted according to your preference. I will provide all the advice for its proper use and correct adjustment.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you can discover Japanese tools. For collectors, cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply (advanced) DIY enthusiasts.
