Rare Japanese Plane "Hira Kanna" 65mm "Sanshiro"

The Daï (Japanese white oak block) is solid and in perfect condition; the sole is perfect and perfectly straight. The Daï measures: length 273 mm, width 81 mm, height 34 mm. It features a "Tsutsumi," which is a finish at the mouth that allows it to be narrowed; it is a refinement by "Daya" (Daï maker). The oak grain selection is simply perfect (very stable).

The plane was hand-forged; the hammered finish is very fine and elegant: it is traditional charcoal forging with clay tempering. This can be seen on the back of the blade at the demarcation line of this tempering protection. The signature is magnificent, and the cap iron is very thick. This is a vintage kanna, so it is impossible to say exactly what steel it is made of (likely an equivalent to white steel). It probably dates back to the 1980s (Showa period). The blade bed has been adjusted after more than six months of storage. This adjustment allows the blade to descend to the mouth correctly, with pressure, but not too much to avoid deforming the Daï. The bevel is set at a 25° angle.

This kanna comes from a very good forge and the Daï is perfectly executed. It is indeed the work of craftsmen who work with the greatest devotion at their forge. It is a very beautiful, well-made kanna.
