Rare Japanese Planer "Hira Kanna" 65mm "Juichi"
Rare Japanese Planer "Hira Kanna" 65mm "Juichi"
This Japanese plane "Hira Kanna" has a 65mm wide blade. The plane is vintage and almost new. It is from the "Juichi" brand produced during the "Showa" period (70-80). The famous "Kengo Usui" worked for this brand, but I cannot certify that this is the case for this particular iron even if the invoice is very similar to his work (I have one in my collection).
The Dai (Japanese white oak block) is solid and in perfect condition, the sole is perfect, it is very straight. The Dai measures: length 272mm, width 80mm, height 36mm. It is solid and heavy. The iron is made of hand-forged two-layer carbon steel. It is impossible to say what type of steel it is given the period. The rolling is very fine and regular, proof of great mastery of the blacksmith. The cutting edge works very well, I sharpened it to 8000 grit. The Ura (back of the iron) is very well executed and has this gray texture typical of clay annealing. The counter iron is laminated and would require more precise sharpening. The signature is typical of the Juichi brand, a very renowned Japanese carpenter confirmed this to me.
This type of kanna is appreciated and sought after by Japanese plane enthusiasts; the Juichi brand is associated with the prestigious Kengo Usui. This kanna is of excellent forge. The Dai is perfectly executed. This is indeed the class of craftsman who works with the greatest devotion to their forge.
This is a very good quality plane for experienced users or users who would like to move up a level. It can be used in carpentry or on panel work in cabinetmaking. The plane can be delivered raw or adjusted (the sole) according to your convenience (finishing or roughing).
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you can discover Japanese tools. For collectors, cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply (advanced) DIY enthusiasts.
