This rare Japanese "Hira Kanna" plane has a 65mm wide blade. The plane is perfectly new. The kanna was made by the famous Funatsu Yuuji under the Funahiro brand.
Funahiro represents the pinnacle of what is currently being made in Japan. This shokunin forges his tools in the city of Yoita in the Echigo prefecture on the west coast of Japan, famous for its best blacksmiths (Usi Kengo, Tsunehiro, Kiyohisa...). Funahiro is at the peak of his craft; he only produces his kannas in batches of 300 pieces. He is now very old, and it is possible that he may retire well-deservedly soon. Therefore, it should be understood that this type of kanna is a sort of rare vintage.
The plane, named "Tenkeï", is forged from a special blended steel for which only Funahiro knows the secret. The Dai, a solid Japanese white oak block, is in perfect condition; the sole is very smooth and perfectly straight. The Dai measures: 289mm in length, 81mm in width, and 35mm in height. It was crafted by the best daiya, who is none other than "Koyoshiya". It is truly sublime, perfectly adjusted with a Tsutsumi (mouth reduction). It is delivered in a calligraphed paulownia wood kiri box with a faux leather protective pouch for transport.
The iron is made of high-carbon (special blended) bi-layer hand-forged steel. The iron features a forge-blackened finish. This kanna is from the best of forges and the Dai is perfectly executed. It is indeed this type of brand that produces the highest quality tools in very small batches.
This is a top-quality plane for a user who would like to own a small treasure. It can be used in fine woodworking or carpentry. Like any new plane, there is a whole set of adjustments to be made before use. The plane can be delivered raw or adjusted according to your preference. I will provide all the advice for its proper use and adjustment.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you will be able to discover Japanese tools. For collectors, cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply (advanced) hobbyists.
