Rare pair of vintage extra-long Japanese "Ootsuki Nomi" scissors, 24 and 48mm

This pair of Japanese chisels called "Ootsuki Nomi" has widths of 24mm and 48mm and a length of 600mm. The handles are made of Japanese red oak. Ootsuki Nomi always come in pairs with two different widths. These are vintage tools that are practically new and imported directly from Japan. They date back to the "Showa" period, 60s-70s.

The Ura (back of the blade) are perfectly executed. I have flattened them, which will greatly facilitate their sharpening, as it is the most sensitive and time-consuming part. The blades are made of hand-forged, two-layer high-carbon steel. The lamination has a good layer of hard steel that extends well up the sides of the blade.

Sharpening of the bevels will be required. I reserve the technique for correctly sharpening these chisels for their buyer. For chisels like the tsuki, you must have optimal sharpening because the chisels are simply pushed.This type of tool is very rare today in this quality: black ura = annealed after shaping, charcoal forged.

These "Oosuki Nomi" chisels (paring chisels in English) are used for finishing. They are very, very long at 600mm (an oire nomi is 210mm by comparison) to facilitate finishing work on large-scale joinery. They are the equivalent of our heavy-duty chisels, but here there is no striking, only finishing. These chisels are made to finish joinery and only by pushing with the hands. These Ootsuki Nomi are truly well-calibrated for carpentry work; they are heavy enough to carry the body without too much effort. They are dedicated to the construction of large components for temples in Japan.
