This Japanese "Hira Kanna" plane has a 65mm wide blade. The plane is vintage and nearly new. It is an "Azuma Genji" brand plane. The kanna dates from the Showa period (70s-80s). It is nearly new, having been used lightly.
The Dai, the Japanese white oak block, is solid and in perfect condition; the sole is very smooth and perfectly straight. The Dai measures: length 274mm, width 83mm, height 36mm. It is very sturdy and heavy.
The blade is made of hand-forged, high-carbon laminated steel. The blade is marked with this feather motif reserved for high-class planes. It is oil-quenched. The blade was forged at a low temperature over charcoal with a clay annealing process. This can be seen on the back of the blade with a demarcation line. The cap iron is thick, laminated, and signed like the blade.
This kanna is of excellent forge quality and the Dai is perfectly executed. This brand was known for producing high-quality tools in quantity. Luxury, but affordable... This was Japan before the digital age. It is a high-quality plane for an experienced user or a user looking to move to the next level. It can be used in cabinetmaking or carpentry.
As with any new plane, there is a set of adjustments to be made before use. The plane can be delivered raw or adjusted according to your preference. I will provide all the advice for its proper use and correct settings.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled rather than pushed. With this tool, you will be able to discover Japanese tools. For collectors, cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply for the (advanced) hobbyist.
