This pair of "Ootsuki Nomi" Japanese chisels has widths of 24mm and 48mm and a length of 570mm (slightly shorter than the standard size). The handles are made of ebony. Ootsuki Nomi always come in pairs with two different widths. These are perfectly new tools, imported directly from Japan. They date from the 90s and are from the "Oyama" brand. The Ura (back of the blade) is perfectly executed. It will be necessary to flatten the Ura, as is always the case with new chisels before use.
The blades are made of high-carbon, two-layer hand-forged white steel. The lamination has a good layer of hard steel that extends well up the sides of the blade. A very fine sharpening (8000-10000 grit) will be required. For chisels like these, optimal sharpening is essential because they are used by pushing only. These ootsuki have a unique feature: the blades are screwed into the handle. This is indeed very practical for transporting them and, above all, for being able to sharpen them without having to tap the blades to remove them from the handles.
These "Ootsuki Nomi" chisels (paring chisels) are used for finishing. They are very, very long (an oire nomi is 210mm for comparison) to facilitate finishing work on large-scale joinery. They are the equivalent of our paring chisels, but here they are not for striking, only for finishing. These chisels are made to finish joints and are used only by pushing with the hands. These Ootsuki Nomi are truly well calibrated for timber framing; they are heavy enough to carry momentum without too much effort. They are dedicated to the construction of large elements for temples in Japan.
They will be packed with the utmost care for safe shipping.
These are tools intended for carpenters only; excellent sharpening skills are already required to use this tool correctly. I will provide all the advice for its proper use.
With these tools, you can discover Japanese tools. For carpenters, sculptors, cabinetmakers, or simply handymen.
