Beautiful Japanese Plane "Hira Kanna" 70mm Grain "Mokume"
Beautiful Japanese Plane "Hira Kanna" 70mm Grain "Mokume"
This new Japanese plane "Hira Kanna" has a 70mm wide blade with the so-called "Mokume" wood grain finish. The plane is vintage from the brand "Kiyomitsu". It is second hand (hence the low price for a Mokume). It is directly imported from Japan.
The Dai (Japanese white oak block) is solid and in perfect condition, the sole is perfect, it is very straight. The Dai measures: length 289mm, width 89mm, height 37mm. It is really strong and heavy... The selection of the oak flow is just perfect (very stable). The Dai has a Tsutsumi, it is a small machining at the level of the light, this part left during machining allows to close the light a little more. The iron layer is already adjusted. The sole will have to be resurfaced.
The iron is made of hand-forged two-layer carbon steel. It is a blue steel (Blue Paper = Aogami). The cutting edge works very well. The Mokume pattern and the signature are just magnificent, the counter-iron is also signed with the same name, it is very thick and laminated. The counter-iron has been used very little. On the other hand, the Ura (back of the iron) has been incorrectly sharpened over time, its sharpening goes back too high. It is just aesthetic because normally you have to concentrate your sharpening on the first centimeter with a fine stone (3000-6000) to avoid removing too much material and going too far up your sharpening along the iron.
This kanna is of excellent forge and the Dai is perfectly executed. It is indeed this class of craftsman who works with the greatest devotion their forge like Yamamoto, Mizuno, etc... It is a very beautiful kanna, very well preserved, this partly explains its price.
This is the premium quality plane for experienced users or a user who would like to move up a level. It can be used in carpentry, on frame parts, or on panel work in cabinetmaking. The plane can be delivered raw or adjusted (sole) according to your convenience. I will provide all the advice for its proper use and its proper settings. The kanna is supplied in its original box.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you will be able to discover Japanese tools.
