This "Hira Kanna" Japanese plane by the famous "Chiyotsuru Sadahide" features a 70mm wide blade. The plane was forged by the renowned Naohide, third generation. It was forged in the city of Miki in Banshu prefecture. He is one of the best active blacksmiths, renowned for his blue steel blades. It is imported directly from Japan. It is practically new.
The Dai (Japanese white oak block) is solid and in perfect condition; the sole is perfect and perfectly straight. The Dai measures: 288mm in length, 89mm in width, and 36mm in height. It is very sturdy and heavy... The selection of the oak cut is simply perfect (very stable). The Dai features a Tsutsumi, a small machining detail at the mouth; this section left during machining allows the mouth to be closed slightly more. The blade bed has been adjusted. This adjustment allows the blade to seat down to the mouth correctly, with pressure, but not too much to avoid deforming the Dai.
The blade is hand-forged, two-layer carbon steel. It is Blue Paper No. 2 steel (Aogami). The support steel (jigane) is kamaji, which is an old-style forged steel. It is often collected by blacksmiths. It most often comes from boat chains, anchors, or deck elements... The cutting edge performs very, very well. The signature is magnificent and the polished finish is very beautiful. The cap iron is very thick and laminated.
This kanna is of excellent forge and the Dai is perfectly executed. It belongs to that class of craftsmen who work at their forge with the greatest devotion, like Yamamoto, Mizuno, etc... It is a very beautiful kanna. Naohide produces very small series, and even in Japan, they are hard to find. This partly explains its price. It is almost ready to use. You will need to sharpen the cap iron and tune the sole.
