This magnificent Japanese "Hira Kanna" plane has a 70mm wide blade. It is imported directly from Japan.
The plane is a vintage model from the "Dosan" brand. It is practically new.
The Dai is solid and in perfect condition; the sole is perfect and perfectly straight. The Dai measures: length 288mm, width 86mm, height 34mm. It is truly sturdy and heavy... It is made of rosewood, and its quarter-sawn grain is simply perfect (kado masame).
The steel type is unknown, and this kanna is no longer in production. The supporting steel (jigane) is kamaji. You can see this from the inclusions in the bevel. It is an old, very soft steel that makes sharpening easy. The ura is finely shaped. The stamp is very minimalist and the hammered finish of the blade is very raw. The chipbreaker is thick and laminated.
This kanna is of excellent forge quality and the Dai is perfectly crafted. It truly belongs to that class of artisans who work with the greatest devotion to their forge. It is a very beautiful kanna made of precious wood, which partly explains its price. The chipbreaker will need to be sharpened and the sole adjusted. This is a premium quality plane for an experienced user or a user looking to level up. It can be used in joinery, on timber framing pieces, or for cabinetmaking panel work.
The plane can be delivered raw or adjusted (sole) according to your preference. New planes always require an initial set of adjustments before use. I will provide all the advice necessary for its proper use and adjustment.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you can discover Japanese tools. For carpenters, cabinetmakers, sculptors, joiners, or simply (advanced) DIY enthusiasts.
