This Japanese "Hira Kanna" plane has a 65mm wide blade with a beautiful hammered finish. The plane is vintage yet new and imported directly from Japan.
The Dai (Japanese red oak block) is solid and in perfect condition; the sole is flawless and perfectly straight. The Dai measures: 273mm in length, 86mm in width, and 36mm in height. It is very sturdy and heavy... The selection of the oak stock is simply perfect (very stable). The Dai features a Tsutsumi, a small machining detail at the mouth, which is left during the process to allow the mouth to be closed a little more.
The iron is made of hand-forged, two-layer high-carbon steel. The feather-like hammered pattern is typical of irons crafted with the utmost care. The chipbreaker is also of very high quality; it is a very thick, laminated piece that is also signed.
This kanna is from an excellent forge, and the Dai is perfectly executed. It belongs to that class of artisans who work with the greatest devotion to their craft, like Yamamoto, Mizuno, etc... It is a very beautiful kanna, preserved with great care, which partly explains its price. It is highly likely to be an early work by Takeo Nakano.
This is a premium-quality plane for an experienced user or someone looking to take their skills to the next level. It can be used in joinery, on timber framing components, or for cabinetmaking panel work. The plane can be delivered raw or with the sole tuned to your preference. New planes always require an initial round of adjustments before use. I will provide all the advice needed for its proper use and adjustment.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you can discover Japanese craftsmanship. For collectors, cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply DIY enthusiasts.
