This magnificent Japanese knife called a "Kurikogatana" has a 168mm long blade. I designed its look and crafted the handle and saya myself. The idea was to create a kogatana in the traditional style of those used for Ikebana, but much longer. The goal was to create a versatile knife with a straight bevel that can also be used at the tip. It can be used for multiple tasks, in sculpting, for Ikebana, or for leatherwork.
The blade is 168mm long from the top of the tang. Its thickness is approximately 4.7mm. The iron is made of high-carbon, hand-forged two-layer laminated (damascus) steel (Hitachi). It has a beautiful wood-grain finish.
The ura (hollow on the back) is particularly well-executed, especially for this length. It is very straight and regular.
I had this blade made by a Chinese specialist in Japanese craftsmanship who lives in the small port of Weihai in the Shandong province, right across from Korea. It is worth noting that the majority of Japanese tools are of Chinese origin. And today, Chinese craftsmanship has regained its former glory.
I shaped the handle and saya from a lovely piece of Ziricote, also known as Siamese persimmon. I wanted a design in the Kanto style, rounded and sleek. I used an oil and shellac finish that I am particularly fond of. It allows the wood fibers to remain more visible.
Once closed, the kurikogatana is 340mm long. This type of Kogatana is essential in any good workshop. Properly sharpened, it is used for numerous tasks. It is at once a cutter, a trimming knife, a leather knife, and a marking or wood-carving knife.
With this tool, you will be able to discover Asian tools. For cabinetmakers, carpenters, luthiers, or simply for the (advanced) handyman.
