This Japanese chisel called "Tataki Nomi" has a width of 30mm and a length of 300mm/ It is a fairly recent new tool (90's) from the brand "Oyama" (from the eponymous city).

The iron is made of hand-forged two-layer white steel carbon steel. There is a good layer of hard steel (a guarantee of quality for tataki nomi). The handle is made of Japanese red oak. This is the last one I have left.

These "Tataki Nomi" (timber chisel in English) are similar to our (longer) carpenter's chisels, thicker and longer than the small "Oire Nomi" popular with Westerners. These chisels are made to withstand much more impact during work. They are perfectly suited for making mortises on frames, but also for furniture with hardwoods such as oak (plan for a slight change in bevel angle).

This type of Japanese chisel is hard to find in this size and quality. Like all new chisels, sharpening is required. The ferrule will also need to be adjusted (very easy to do). First, you need to cut (crush with a hammer) the handle a little more so that the ferrule leaves 2 to 3mm of the handle protruding. Then, simply wet the end of the wooden handle and strike with a hammer (using its edge) concentrically so as to push the wood around the ferrule. Yes, manufacturers generally roughly sharpen their production to save time. In Japan, it is always up to the purchaser of the tool to finalize and adapt the tool to their own use, it is a philosophy of the tool...

With this tool, you can discover Japanese tools. For collectors, cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply DIY enthusiasts.
