This magnificent spear is actually the ancestor of the Japanese plane. Called "Yari Kanna," it predates the appearance of the hira kanna in Japan. This yari kanna was used to rough-hew surfaces on beams or boards. Today, it is used more as a tool for creating surface effects on wood. However, these Yari kanna are still effective, particularly for debarking very quickly. It is imported directly from Japan.
The blade's cutting edge is 94mm long. Its total length (with the tang) is 280mm. It is truly beautiful, with a slight curve that facilitates the cut. The handle is 492mm long, with a profile measuring 23 X 19mm. It is made of Japanese cypress (Hinoki) and was crafted by yours truly.
The blade is made of hand-forged, two-layer high-carbon steel. The ura is very finely shaped, and the wavy lamination is very rare. This allows for great stability during the forging process.
This Yari kanna is of excellent forge quality. It comes from that class of artisan who works on their forge with the greatest devotion. I sharpened it myself in order to test it.
This is a Yari kanna of excellent quality for an experienced user who is already well-versed in sharpening kannas. It can be used in carpentry, on structural timber pieces, or on panel work in cabinetmaking.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled rather than pushed. With this tool, you can discover Japanese tools. For carpenters, cabinetmakers, sculptors, joiners, or simply (advanced) DIY enthusiasts.
