Nice Japanese Planer "Hira Kanna" 65mm "Nokane"
Nice Japanese Planer "Hira Kanna" 65mm "Nokane"
This Japanese plane "Hira Kanna" has a 65mm wide blade. The plane is vintage from the brand "Nokane" and new. It was forged during the "Showa" period (70-80). It has the same characteristics as good forged blades: an iron with a very fine forge (very practical for sharpening), a carbon annealing.
The Dai (Japanese white oak block) is solid and in perfect condition, the sole is perfect, it is very straight. The Dai measures: length 290mm, width 84mm, height 37mm. The iron is made of hand-forged, two-layer, high-carbon steel. It is impossible to say what type of steel it is given the period (perhaps a blue steel). The cutting edge works very well, but like any new plane, it is necessary to provide a finer sharpening (6000-8000).
The punch is nicely affixed in a cartouche and the iron is very refined, the counter-iron is thick, laminated. This kanna is from a very good forge, soft to the coal (rare today). The Daï is perfectly executed. It is the good quality plane for experienced users or a user who would like to move up to the next level. It can be used in carpentry, on frame parts, or on panel work in cabinetmaking.
The plane can be delivered raw or adjusted (the sole) according to its convenience (finishing or roughing). New planes always need a first series of adjustments before use. I will provide all the advice for its proper use.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you can discover Japanese tools. For collectors, cabinetmakers, carpenters, joiners, or simply DIY enthusiasts.
