Nice Japanese Plane "Hira Kanna" 65mm "Kongomaru"
Nice Japanese Plane "Hira Kanna" 65mm "Kongomaru"
This Japanese "Hira Kanna" plane has a 65mm wide blade.
This is a vintage plane from the "Showa" period around the 80s. It is perfectly new from the "Kongomaru" brand. Its manufacture resembles that of the "Higashi Genji" brand which manufactured quality planes.
The Dai (Japanese white oak block) is solid and in very good condition. The sole has been deformed by the very long storage time. I could flatten it on request.
The Dai measures: length 273mm, width 80mm, height 36mm.
It's really strong and heavy...
The iron is made of hand-forged, two-layer, high-carbon steel. The rolling is very fine and very regular. The cutting edge works well. But sharpening is to be expected as on all new planes. The punch is very pretty and the iron has a beautiful finish with feather-shaped stripes. Normally this decoration is reserved for exceptional kannas. Here it is a commercial style effect. The counter-iron is thick and rolled.
This kanna has an honorable forge and the Dai is perfectly executed. It will be a good plane for those who want to start with something new of good quality without breaking the bank.
The whole point of buying this type of vintage tool is that the dai has already worked and will not move anymore, the same goes for the iron (yes, laminated irons move with time and humidity).
It can be used in carpentry or on panel work in cabinetmaking. The plane can be delivered raw or adjusted according to your convenience.
I will provide all the advice for its proper use and adjustments.
Unlike European planes, Japanese planes are pulled instead of pushed. With this tool, you will be able to discover Japanese tools.
