This Japanese "Shinogi Nomi" chisel, also known as "Umeki nomi," has a width of 15mm and a length of 220mm. Its typical pyramidal shape allows for working in the corners of dovetails. It is a premium tool, imported directly from Japan.
The handle is made of Japanese red oak. The Ura (the hollow-ground back of the blade) is perfectly executed. This is a chisel from the Yasaku brand, produced in medium batches in the city of Miki. The blade is made of hand-forged, two-layer carbon white steel (White Steel 1), with a thick layer of hard steel (a mark of quality).
I personally know the sharpener who mounts and tunes these chisels. These chisels are every bit as good as the big names. They are produced in a workshop where three generations work together, assisted by other staff. That is why they offer the best value for money.
These "Oire Nomi" chisels are short. They are very pleasant for small cabinetmaking tasks. This one features the so-called "Shinogi" (beveled) pyramidal shape. These are very good chisels for discovering higher-end tools and for deepening your understanding of how such chisels are used.
Like all new chisels, a fine sharpening should be expected, as well as the adjustment of the hoop. In Japan, it is always up to the tool's owner to finish and adapt it to their own use; it is a philosophy of the tool... I will provide all the advice needed to achieve a proper setup.
With this tool, you will be able to discover Japanese tools. For cabinetmakers, sculptors, carpenters, or simply DIY enthusiasts.
