This Japanese "Ootsuki nomi" chisel has a width of 48mm and a length of 580mm. It has an ebony handle. This is a pre-owned tool in very good condition, imported directly from Japan, and made by the "Ogawa" brand.
Its shape with beveled profiles is called "Mentori". The blade is made of hand-forged two-layer high-carbon steel. The lamination is clean, with a good layer that rises well along the sides of the blade. A very fine sharpening will be necessary (8000-10000). The bevel is slightly oblique, but on this type of nomi, this can be advantageous.
These "Oosuki Nomi" chisels (paring chisels) are used for finishing work. They are very, very long at 600mm (an oire nomi is 210mm for comparison) to facilitate finishing work on large-scale joints. They are the equivalent of our slick chisels, but here they are not for striking, only for finishing. These chisels are made to finish joints solely by pushing with the hands. These Ootsuki Nomi are very well calibrated for carpentry work; they are heavy enough to carry the body without too much effort. They are dedicated to the fabrication of large elements for temples in Japan.
They will be packed with the greatest care for safe shipping.
These are tools intended for carpenters only; excellent knowledge of sharpening is required to use this tool correctly. I will provide all the advice for its proper use.
With these tools, you will be able to discover Japanese tools. For cabinetmakers, sculptors, and woodworkers.
