This Japanese "Tsuki nomi" chisel has a width of 30mm and a length of 360mm. It features a handle made of Japanese red oak. It is a brand-new tool imported directly from Japan, from the famous "Kitsune" brand located in Miki. You can see the fox symbol (Kitsune in Japanese) on the blade. Miki is THE city for Japanese tools, especially wood chisels. Renowned blacksmiths are found in this city. And it is also in this small town that the famous tool festival "Kezoroukai" takes place every year, a famous event where you can see the competitions for the longest and thinnest wood shaving.
The Ura (back of the blade) is perfectly flat. It has the shape known as "mentori" with beveled edges.
The blade is made of hand-forged, high-carbon, two-layer white steel. The lamination is very beautiful, with a good layer extending well up the sides of the blade. Very fine sharpening will be necessary (8000-10000).
These "Tsuki nomi" (paring chisels) are used for finishing work. They are quite long (an oire nomi is 220mm) to facilitate finishing work on medium-sized joints. These chisels are made for finishing joints and only by pushing with the hands (no striking). This Tsuki nomi is very well calibrated and not too long, making it truly practical for furniture making.
Tsuki nomi, also called Usu nomi, are tools intended for joiners and cabinetmakers; one must already have excellent knowledge of sharpening to use this tool correctly. I will provide all the advice for its proper use.
With these tools, you will be able to discover Japanese tools. For cabinetmakers, sculptors, and joiners.
