This vintage Japanese "Oire Nomi" chisel is 42 mm wide and 220 mm long. It is a new tool imported directly from Japan. The handle is made of Japanese boxwood (Gumi). The Ura (the hollow shape on the back of the blade) is perfectly executed. It is a chisel produced in the famous city of Miki, bearing its M symbol. This city is still highly renowned for its tools, especially its chisels; master Ouchi has his forge there, and the famous Kezuroukai competition takes place there every year.
The blade is made of hand-forged, two-layer high-carbon steel; it features a thick layer of hard steel (a guarantee of quality). These "Oire Nomi" chisels are short. They are very pleasant for small cabinetmaking tasks. This one features the "Mentori" shape with beveled edges.
This type of Japanese chisel is hard to find in this size and quality. It is a vestige of an era when production was in full swing in Miki. Today, the number of manufacturers in Miki can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
It is an excellent chisel for discovering something very high-end and for deepening your use of such chisels. Like all new chisels, fine sharpening is to be expected, as well as adjusting the ferrule. In Japan, it is always up to the buyer of the tool to finalize and adapt the tool to their own use; it is a philosophy of the tool... I will provide all the advice needed to achieve a proper adjustment.
With this tool, you will be able to discover Japanese tools. For a carpenter, cabinetmaker, woodcarver, or simply a handyman.
