This Japanese chisel, known as an "Ootsuki Nomi," has a width of 42mm and a length of 560mm. The handle is made of Japanese red oak. Ootsuki Nomi always come in pairs, but this one is sold individually. It is a new vintage tool imported directly from Japan, from the "Yamaki" brand, dating back to the 90s.
The ura (back of the blade) is very well executed. It will need to be flattened, as is always the case for new chisels before use. The blade is made of hand-forged, two-layer high-carbon steel (likely white steel). The lamination features a good layer of hard steel that extends well up the sides of the blade.
Very fine sharpening (8000-10000 grit) will be required; for chisels like the tsuki, an optimal edge is necessary since the chisels are strictly push-cut.
These "Ootsuki Nomi" (paring chisels) are used for finishing work. They are very, very long at 600mm (an oire nomi is 210mm for comparison) to facilitate finishing work on large-scale joints. They are the equivalent of our slick chisels, but for finishing only, with no striking. These chisels are manufactured to finish joints and are intended for use solely by hand pressure. These Ootsuki Nomi are very well calibrated for timber framing work; they are heavy enough to carry the body without too much effort. They are dedicated to the crafting of large elements for temples in Japan.
They will be packed with the utmost care for safe shipping.
These tools are intended for carpenters only; excellent sharpening knowledge is required to use this tool correctly. I will provide all the advice for its proper use.
