This Japanese chisel, called "Ootsuki Nomi," is 24mm wide and 632mm long. The handle is made of ebony. It is a new vintage tool imported directly from Japan. It is from the "Sukemaru" brand, third generation, made by the famous Yoshiro Kinzaburo in Yoita.

The ura (back of the blade) is sublime; it is called Ken-Ura. This type of Ura is particularly complex to create. This technique is being lost, and today there are almost no blacksmiths left who still perform it.

It will need to be flattened, as is always the case for new chisels before use. The blade is made of high-carbon White Steel No. 1, hand-forged in two layers. The lamination has a good layer of hard steel.

A very fine sharpening (8000-10000) will be required; for chisels like tsuki, you must have an optimal edge because the chisels are simply pushed.

These "Ootsuki Nomi" chisels (paring chisels in English) are used for finishing. They are very, very long at 600mm (an oire nomi is 210mm for comparison) to facilitate finishing work on large-scale joints. They are the equivalent of our roughing chisels, but here, there is no striking, only finishing. These chisels are made to finish joints, solely by pushing with the hands. These Ootsuki Nomi are truly well-calibrated for carpentry work; they are heavy enough to carry the body without too much effort. They are dedicated to the construction of large elements for temples in Japan.
